Fake: A text or email claiming to be from the CRA says you are owed a refund and asks you to click a link and give your SIN, date of birth or online banking details to get it by e-transfer.
The real one: The CRA does not send refunds or payments by e-transfer or text message, and only sends text messages for multi-factor authentication when you sign in.

Fake: A text or email claiming to be the CRA offers you a GST/HST refund or credit (now the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit) and asks you to reply or click a link to fill in an application before an urgent deadline.

Fake: A caller claiming to be your bank's fraud department (sometimes saying they work with the CAFC) says your account is compromised and asks you to move money to a "safe" account, give card details or codes, or keep it secret.
The real one: Hang up and call your bank using the number on the back of your debit or credit card; the CAFC and police will never ask you to transfer money or make a payment.
