What you get
Consumer Protection Ontario, run by the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement, enforces Ontario's consumer protection laws, investigates alleged violations and handles complaints about businesses and collection agencies. The ministry recommends writing to the business first; if it does not resolve your complaint, file one online, on paper or by email, and the ministry contacts you within 15 business days and examines each complaint to decide what action, if any, to take. There is no cost. A collection agency cannot harass you, use threats or misleading information, or, once it has spoken with you, contact you more than 3 times in 7 days for the same debt without your consent; filing a complaint does not cancel a debt you owe. It may not be able to help with events more than two years ago, business-to-business matters, or claims beyond a refund of money paid or cancelling an agreement.
Who qualifies:
- The ministry recommends writing to the business first
- The events are less than two years old
What you need to apply:
- Copies of your supporting documents
- The online form, or the paper form by mail or email
